We did most of our shopping for gifts here, they seem to have a bit of everything and very good prices. We liked knowing that it is a cooperative of local artisans.
What is there not to like? This is a collective, so we knew that every peso of profit went directly to the artists in the various communities represented. By shopping here I felt I could not only purchase something beautiful from Oaxaca but also help to preserve the best of the traditional arts represented. The works are housed in a beautiful building, and the quality and quantity of the work is almost overwhelming. We were helped by the names over the doors, which give the community/area from which the works come. I was surprised by how low the prices are, too, compared to the quality of the work. This is the finest artisanship that can be easily be bought in all of Oaxaca. Just for one example, our guide told us that some vendors of the carved animals (alebrijes) that are so well-done near Oaxaca, the quality of the copal is not always the best because the artists don't let the wood age enough. I am sure that here they only allow the best artisans to be represented. Our young hosts were enormously helpful and answered all of our questions. Don't miss the wonderful treasure!
